Charles Cordell is the author of English Civil War historical fiction series Divided Kingdom, including the debut novel God’s Vindictive Wrath. His writing has received praise in editorial and readers’ reviews alike.‘

Charles Cordell, a former soldier, writes with bravura confidence.’ The Times

Cordell’s latest novel, The Keys of Hell and Death, is set between Wiltshire and Somerset in July 1643. It opens at the Battle of Lansdown Hill, outside Bath, and moves at pace via the Siege of Devizes and the Battle of Roundway Down to climax at the Storming of Bristol. Cordell’s writing draws on his time spent in the fraying margins of civilisation. It is also informed by a deep study of The General Crisis of the 17th Century, and its echoes today.

Added to this mix is a long-held passion for history and a brief period as an archaeologist. Charles Cordell is now working on a novel that will include the Massacre of Bolton and the cataclysmic Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. It is due to be published in spring 2026.
